Looking for the best Master Thatcher in Wiltshire?

Rob Marriner Master thatchers in Wiltshire have a combined experience of over 30 years. Rob himself was trained by a 3rd generation Master thatcher. We take great care and pride in following the standards of craftsmanship set by the National society of Master Thatchers and the Wiltshire Master thatchers association.

Why choose Rob Marriner Master Thatcher?

We cover all aspects of thatching work required for all thatched roofing in Wiltshire including:

  • Re-thatching

Using combed wheat Reed on a thatched roof, depending on the thickness and layers of straw on the thatched roof we prepare the roof and strip off what is necessary to achieve a tight and dry base coat with a thickness of between 8 to 14 inches to re fix a top coat of Thatch too. We aim for a thickness of up to 14 inches. This is standard practice for a Wiltshire Master thatcher.

Using water Reed it's standard practice to screw fix one coat onto the batons which are fixed horizontally across the rafters. Some Master Thatchers spar coat water Reed onto a base coat in a similar way combed wheat is applied to base coated thatched roof. Rob and his team of Master Thatchers work by fixing the water Reed directly to baton and rafters where possible.

Once a roof is thatched you can expect to get up to 25 years from a combed wheat Reed roof and up to 35 years from a water reed roof. A thatched roof can last less or longer than these times depending on a number of factors:

    • The skill of the Master Thatcher
    • The pitch of the thatched roof
    • Features such as valleys and windows tend to not last quite so long
    • The quality of the materials used
  • Re-Ridging

Our Master thatchers use combed wheat Reed to make up their ridges. We reverse the straw and draw it out to make them longer. These are known as wraps or Yealms. This is another traditional method. We use the best quality hardware made hazel spars for our patterns and spar work. Our ridges have a proven lifespan of at least 10 years and up to 14 years. This is by far the best method of ridging and is carried out by most Master Thatchers.

  • Ornamental thatched ridges
  • Thatched walls
  • Thatched roof repairs
  • Thatched roof surveys
  • Wire netting work
  • Chimney works

Rob and his team of Master Thatchers work with all Thatching Materials and styles including:

  • Combed wheat reed
  • Water reed
  • Long straw
